THE BRIEF

Laphroaig wanted to increase awareness of the brand by highlighting the challenging flavour profiles associated with the whisky in a 15 second commercial.

THE CONCEPT

We decided on a stormy sea scene, as it allowed us to create something visually striking, whilst evoking the stormy, smoky, salty and rugged qualities that are synonymous with Laphroaig and Islay.
The tagline, ’Challenging by Nature’, summed up the whisky perfectly whilst also describing the struggles faced by the fisherman steering the boat in the storm.

THE EXECUTION

We bought an old boat and rigged it up on a giant axis in the studio yard, we kitted it out with lights, fresh seaweed (via a fun day trip to Kent) and fishing equipment. An off-duty fire truck helped us to create the rain, by rigging their powerful hose to a large sheet we were able to create the illusion of a torrential storm. Luckily we created the actual sea using CGI as the rain alone caused the studio to flood!
Working with our video production partners, we handled everything from conception, story boarding, casting, production and editing, to final delivery. We were freezing cold, soaking wet and covered in seaweed, but it was one of the most fun projects we’ve worked on to date.

THE RESULT

Originally filmed for use in Sweden, the commercial was so well received that we have re-created several different language versions for use across Europe and the US.
